Governor Alia Sets-Up Judicial Commission of Inquiry to Investigate Ukum Unrest

The Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has approved a five-member Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the recent disturbances in Ukum.

The committee, approved by Governor Alia on July 20th, 2024, will be chaired by Hon. Justice Samson Itodo (Rtd), a seasoned legal expert known for his judicial acumen and fairness.

Other members include: Mr. Felix Iber, SP. Timothy Atondo Ayakpam, Mr. Enyikwola Ejembi as Lead Counsel, and Mrs. Ngufan Ahenjir as Secretary.

In a statement issued by Fidelis Bemsen Mnyim, Esq., the Honourable Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice and Public Order, Governor Alia expressed confidence in the committee’s ability to fulfill its mandate. The governor emphasized their collective experience and commitment to ensuring justice and peace in the region.

The Ukum disturbances have raised significant concern, with reports of escalating violence and community unrest. The establishment of this Judicial Commission of Inquiry is part of the government’s commitment to addressing the root causes of the conflict.

Governor Alia, in congratulating the appointed members, highlighted their distinguished records of service and expertise, expressing optimism that they will diligently carry out their duties to provide clarity and recommendations on the Ukum situation.

The Commission is expected to commence its proceedings promptly, gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and conducting thorough investigations to uncover the facts surrounding the disturbances. Their findings and recommendations will be crucial in informing future actions aimed at restoring peace and stability in Ukum and its environs.
